The Lagos State Government has urged homeowners in government housing estates, especially those who bought homes before 2019, to come forward and collect their Deed of Sub-Lease.
‎
‎A Deed of Sub-Lease is a document that proves ownership of a home in any state-owned housing estate.
‎
‎The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Abdulhafis Toriola, made the appeal during a monthly stakeholders’ meeting with residents of government estates in the Ikorodu Division of the state.
‎
‎This was contained in a statement signed by the agency’s Deputy Director, Ganiu Lawal, on Friday in Lagos.
‎
‎The meeting took place at the Ayangburen Jubilee Housing Estate.
‎
‎Toriola, represented by the Director, Estate Department, Olukemi Fosudo, noted that the Deed of Sub-Lease is an important document that proves ownership of a home in any government estate.
‎
‎Toriola said the property document is also accepted for business purposes such as applying for loans or using the property as collateral.
‎
‎The Deed of Sub-Lease, he clarified, is not the same as the Letter of confirmation.
‎
‎The Letter of Confirmation, according to him, is only given after a buyer has agreed to the terms in the initial Letter of Offer and completed all payments.
‎
‎Toriola urged residents who were yet to receive either the Deed of Sub-Lease or Letter of Confirmation—or have yet to finish paying for their homes—to visit the Ministry of Housing in Alausa for verification and guidance.
‎
‎“We want our homeowners to be fully documented so that they can enjoy peace of mind and all the legal benefits that come with owning property,” he said.
‎
‎The permanent secretary also urged residents to take better ownership of their communities by obeying estate rules and living peacefully with one another.
‎
‎He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making affordable and sustainable housing available to all residents.
