The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed Yakoyo Abula Joint Restaurant in Victoria Island for illegally dumping untreated wastewater and oils into public drains.
The restaurant was shut down on Tuesday morning after officials discovered deliberate discharges that clogged drainage systems and posed hazards such as waterborne diseases.
Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the action in a post shared on his X handle.
He wrote, “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), this morning, sealed off Yakoyo Abula Joint Restaurant, at 134 Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island, for the deliberate discharge of untreated wastewater, fats and oil into public drains, thereby clogging the drains and constituting public nuisance, environmental pollution and posing significant risks to human health.”
The closure is part of the government’s ongoing enforcement campaign under #ZeroToleranceLagos, which has targeted eateries and properties violating environmental laws in the state.
It was reported on Monday that the government had sealed a building in the Lekki Peninsula area on Sunday for discharging untreated wastewater onto a public road.
Wahab noted that the wastewater discharge was damaging the road and constituting a public nuisance.
He added that the act also amounted to environmental pollution and posed a hazard to residents.
