The Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, has charged participating teams in the Ojelabi Football Competition to demonstrate exceptional skill, sportsmanship and teamwork as the tournament kicked off in the Badagry Division.

Declaring the competition open at the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) football pitch, Ijanikin, Ojelabi said the tournament was conceived to identify young talents and promote peaceful coexistence across communities in the division.

He said the competition would provide a platform for players to “shine, learn and make unforgettable memories,” while also positioning them for greater opportunities within and outside Lagos State.

“The purpose of this competition is to create opportunities for teams and players to excel, showcase their talents and attract sponsorship that will support sports development in Badagry Division and Lagos State as a whole,” he said.

He added that beyond football, the event was aimed at reinforcing team spirit, discipline and unity among youths.

“This is a test case for us and I am confident that our collective efforts will bring more benefits to Badagry Division now and in the future,” Ojelabi said, urging players to protect the integrity of the tournament for their personal growth and development.

The APC chairman also commended members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Local Organising Committee (LOC), sub-committees, sponsors and volunteers for their dedication in putting the competition together.

Speaking earlier, Chairman of the LOC, Mr. Ayodeji Williams, said the tournament was designed to discover and reward hidden talents in the division, while promoting healthy rivalry and social harmony.

He appealed to teams and their supporters to abide by the rules of the game and cooperate with match officials and security operatives provided at all venues.

“The teams should shun hooliganism and violence, and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship always,” Williams said.

He thanked Ojelabi for the confidence reposed in the committee, adding that the organisers would not disappoint.

Williams also acknowledged the support of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule; council chairmen in the division; and Vice-Chancellors of LASU and LASUED.

The opening match between Asejere FC and Ilogbo-Elegba ended 2–1 in favour of Ilogbo-Elegba.
