Officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have arrested Sylvester Onyekwere for allegedly dumping refuse illegally on the median of Ago Palace Way in the Okota area of the state.
The arrest, which occurred around 7:15 am on Tuesday, was said to be a clear violation of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.
LAWMA said the suspect’s residential address could not be verified at the time of arrest, and that he had since been transferred to the agency’s legal team office in Oshodi for prosecution.
The arrest was confirmed in a post on X by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegeshin, on Wednesday.
He wrote, “Yesterday, July 29, 2025, at about 7:15 am, a male individual identified as Sylvester Onyekwere was apprehended by @Lawma_gov Surveillance and Enforcement team for illegally dumping refuse on the median of Ago Palace Way, Okota — a clear violation of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.
“The suspect’s address remains unverified and he has since been transferred to the LAWMA Legal Team at the Oshodi Taskforce Office for prosecution.”
Gbadegeshin advised residents to manage their waste responsibly and patronise only licensed waste operators.

It was reported on May 21 that officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps arrested a man, Ogunbadejo Olawale, for dumping waste on the roadside in the Alapere area of the state.
The state Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that he was arrested after being caught dumping refuse illegally in public, following credible surveillance and tip-offs from concerned members of the community.
