Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, has said that the Green line rail will open up new Lagos hubs for development.
Olumide said that the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green Line from Marina to Lekki Free Zone will go well beyond reducing traffic.
The Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) disclosed this on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
The 68-kilometer rail line will feature 17 stations and is strategically designed to connect with the existing Blue Line at Marina, creating a vital interchange for commuters.
The planning commissioner highlighted the rail line’s potential to spur transit-oriented development (TOD) during the project’s scoping workshop in Lagos, where critical stakeholders got a comprehensive briefing on the 68-kilometre rail route transport project.
The Commissioner stated that phase one of the project, which would end at Sangotedo, is scheduled to start shortly.
He also disclosed the government’s long-term goal to finish the full Green Line project within five years, contingent on funds availability.
Phase one starting from Marina will go through Walter Carrington Avenue foreshore to land in the middle of Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue and continue up to Abraham Adesanya before veering to the left and moving to the Ibeju Lekki Airport and later crossing to the Lekki Free Zone.
To fully realise the potential of the new Lagos, which includes neighborhoods like Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, and Eti-Osa, Olumide emphasised the strategic significance of the Green Line and other initiatives like the Lagos-Calabar coastal road.
“The government has made large investments in these areas to promote connectivity and growth,” he said.
In a separate message, Olumide warned that property owners may face severe repercussions if they do not obtain their building approval.
