A yet-to-be-identified policewoman has been hospitalised after a commercial bus rammed into her at the Charly Boy bus stop along the Oshodi-Gbagada Expressway area of Lagos State.

It was learnt the incident happened at about 6 am on Monday while she was stepping out of the police anti-cultism unit along the area.

It was gathered that the bus driver identified simply as Idowu was at top speed when he had a brake failure and lost control in the process.

He was however said to have swerved towards the direction of the office of the anti-cultism unit, thereby crushing the victim.

A resident in the area who identified himself simply as Adekunle said on Tuesday that another vehicle was affected by the incident.

“The woman is a three-star officer attached to the police anti-cultism unit. She just came out of the premises of the station when the bus veered off the road and hit her on the spot. She was lying on the ground unresponsive before some of her colleagues rushed out to take her to the hospital. The bus also damaged another vehicle parked outside the office,” the resident said.

Another eyewitness who did not want his name in print due to the security personnel involved said the pedestrians waiting to board a bus close to the spot were almost crushed by the bus.

”The casualties would have been more than that because people were standing just a few metres away from where the incident happened. The driver had sighted them when he discovered that his brake had failed, that was why he headed towards the direction of the police unit but unfortunately, an officer was affected,” the eyewitness stated.

It was also gathered that the driver was immediately apprehended and taken into the custody of the unit.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation was ongoing.

“Yes, it happened. The driver has been taken into custody. An investigation has also commenced into the incident.”
