A fire on Friday gutted A1 Petroleum Filling Station on Isawo Road, off Agric Bus Stop, Ikorodu, Lagos, causing panic among residents and commuters in the area.
Reports indicate that the blaze reportedly started from a diesel-laden truck parked within the premises of the station, forcing people to scamper for safety as fears of a possible explosion spread.
Videos circulating on social media show officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency responders racing to the scene to contain the inferno. As of press time, no official confirmation had been given on the cause of the fire, casualties, or the extent of damage.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a brief post on X. They said, “Emergency Alert! Fire out at A1 Petroleum Filling Station, Isawo Road, Off Agric bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos. Details soon”
Frequent fires at filling stations in Lagos have raised safety concerns around fuel handling and storage. Most of the incidents have occurred during fuel transfer from trucks into underground tanks, exposing lapses in safety compliance.
While emergency response has improved in recent years, recurrent fires continue to cause heavy property losses and traffic disruptions in the state. Urban planners and safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of operational standards, safer offloading zones, and routine safety audits of petroleum stations.
