The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to transforming the transport and logistics sector through the adoption of clean energy, enhanced safety standards, and expanded financing options for operators.
This reaffirmation came during a meeting held on Wednesday between top officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and the National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).
Speaking at the meeting, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, outlined key achievements recorded under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stressing that the state is accelerating the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles as part of its clean mobility agenda.
He revealed that discussions are underway with the banking sector to broaden funding windows for transport operators, describing the initiative as “transformational.”
Giwa noted that the Presidential Initiative on CNG has already delivered 20 CNG buses to Lagos, in addition to newly acquired 50-seater units, including three LPC buses received just three months earlier.
According to him, the introduction of these buses has reduced commuting costs by at least 30 percent, providing much-needed relief to residents.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Hassan Adekoya, emphasised the administration’s renewed focus on safety in the haulage and logistics sector.
He disclosed that Sanwo-Olu has approved mandatory substance-abuse tests for all truck drivers operating in the state.
“Drivers diagnosed with vision impairment will also receive free government-sponsored corrective eyeglasses, he added.
The Chairman of NARTO, Lagos State branch, Kayode Okunowo, commended the state government’s initiatives and pledged the association’s cooperation in building a safer, more efficient logistics environment.
Also present at the meeting were Directors of the Ministry of Transportation, the Senior Special Assistant on Transport, Education ,and Innovation, as well as members of NARTO.
